March - in like a lion, out like a ...maybe we need to keep roaring?

Hello Dear Readers, in the midst of a troubling and tumultuous February, there were some bright spots.

Our EIGHTH BIRTHDAY was celebrated at the potluck on Valentines Day. It has been quite the journey - starting with a few folks wondering just what we were about, our little social group has provided well over 300 Friday zoom calls, about 84 potlucks, hosted vaccination clinics, LGBTQ+ workshops and seminars, almost 80 educational zoom talks, had booths at about 20 Pride events, organized roughly 150 social gatherings at restaurants, and more. The most significant thing we have accomplished, though, is to provide a safe space online, digitally, and in person for aging queer folks to gather. There really is no membership, no official organization, no dues - just us, openly being together. If you missed the celebration there is more good news: we had so many desserts that the official cake was stored for our March potluck. Call it queer thrifty.

In mid-February, LGBTQ+ Seniors attended a Leadership Conference at Gonzaga University: “A New Era of Visibility and Community Building”.  The conference brought together voices from Washington, Idaho and beyond for a gathering focused on leadership, resilience, and the future of LGBTQ+ advocacy.  Cam, Christine and Dan represented us at the event.  Kudos to them!

The March 20 zoom speakers will be Barb and Anne who work with a group called Demystifying Death. They will elicit our thoughts, concerns, and needs around the end of life. They will then return the following month to present specific ideas for us, queer elders, around these issues. This is a safe way to explore, educate and address how we view this stage of life.

Our first Friday zoom calls have been focusing on individuals volunteering to talk about their coming-out journey.  It has been a wonderful way to deepen the conversation while getting to know each other better. If you would like to share some part of your story with us, please let us know, and we will schedule a time for you.

We really need people to come forward to assist in our participation in Spokane Pride. Please consider volunteering your time and talent in keeping us visible.

Schedule of events:

March 3, noon.  Taco Tuesday.

March 14, noon.  Potluck.

March 19, 10 am - noon.  Coffee and Conversation.

Finally, let us celebrate the life of Jesse Jackson, a strong ally and courageous man who fought for justice and acceptance on all of our behalfs. Rest in Peace.
