HERE WE GO '24. Yikes or Yahoo???
Before we get on with the new, let us take a moment to celebrate the old - 2023 was a year of significant movement for our group. To name a few of the accomplishments:
We developed and launched our very own website that gives us a viable presence in the online world. The website is: lgbtqseniorsoftheinlandnorthwest.
We partnered with Consistent Care through Aging and Long-Term Care of E. WA. to host a vaccination clinic at UU as well as supported several other vaccination clinics. Beyond supporting health in the community, we also received funds for our assistance.
We petitioned for and received scholarships to attend the Say It Out Loud Conference last spring.
We held 12 monthly potlucks for our group with an average attendance in the low twenties and a monthly newsletter has gone out for the past year and is now on the website as well
The steering committee has held monthly zoom meetings, and we also held two one day retreats to focus on developing our vision and process.
We have maintained a weekly zoom call for members for over three years now with a consistent average of 14 people checking in.
We have been able to provide a monthly speaker on our Friday zoom calls throughout the year. Speakers have talked to us about issues of concern to lgbtq+ seniors.
We applied for and received a grant of several thousand dollars to develop a broader outreach to our lgbtq+ senior population regionally.
WE CELEBRATED FIVE YEARS OF EXISTENCE, YAY US
The Steering Committee would like to thank the many volunteers, professionals and organizations who have given generously of their time and talent to make all of this happen.
We were saddened to hear that Carol S, an early participant in our group passed away. May she rest in peace.
January Calendar of Events:
Happy Birthday to our January babies!
Our Friday 4-5 pm zoom calls continue each Friday.
Our monthly potluck is at noon on Saturday, January 13, weather permitting. Please be aware that covid, cold and flu numbers are rising. If you are not feeling well, or are testing positive for covid, we request that you do not attend (you will be missed of course).
Spokane PRIDE is inviting you to join them at Pride Night with the Chiefs January 19th at 7PM. See their website for more information and to purchase tickets and a special PRIDE shirt.
Our scheduled January 20th is a guest speaker from Peer Spokane. They will talk to us about how we might utilize their services - the organization serves to connect with populations in need of social connection.
If you missed the “Don We Now Our Gay Apparel” drag show at nYne last month, you missed a wicked good time. We had hoped to record the show and offer the link to folks not able to attend, but due to copyright laws, alas, you will have to use your imaginations.
Speaking of imagination - what are you imagining for yourself this coming year? Show up on zoom this Friday and share with us!
cheers and blessings from your steering committee
